4:00pm - It is so great to be back in the Sun. I missed my Sparc 20 that I sold on ebay about a week after I did it.. It was really too slow for my needs and so is this one, even though it is about twice as fast as my older one. This one could really use some upgrades as well. Mostly it needs more RAM and a better video card that can do 24 bit and some hardware accelleration on MPEG wouldn't hurt (newer Sun video cards have this) Other items it could use, but aren't as important would be a nicer keyboard/mouse and monitor. However, I can't decide if I want to bother upgrading this or just get an Ultrasparc. I am still trying to decide how to pay for the $200 I charged last night to get this (along with the other items)... So far here are my ideas:

  • Sell the 100-mbit Ethernet/Scsi card that is in the machine
  • Sell my 750 Mhz Athlon based PC or parts of it, which it would be replacing, at least temporarily.
  • Just don't buy anything for the next month or so and use my "play-money" to send to Discover.

There are advantage and disadvantages to each possibility. One thing is for certain, I am keeping the machine itself even if I don't use it for a workstation, it will be my new webserver. I have to think about it some more. I know some people at work who'd buy my Athlon unit. Anyway, should I decide I want to go ahead and use this for my workstation for some period of time I am going to want to activate that 100-mbit ethernet card and use it instead.

Leslie, Adam, and I went to church this morning. I asked Adam later on what he thought and he said it actually perfectly fit where he wanted to be in his spirituality right now. I think he was really impressed. I am not sure if he is planning on going next Sunday or not. He still doesn't have a car. He is trying to find one. I won't be taking him to work anymore since he is going to be at the Arlington location for a while now, unless of course they move me over there.

Speaking of 100-mbit ethernet, I'd like to try to fix that jack in the livingroom. I am starting to get really tired of that 10-mbit coaxial network.. Everytime I record a show it takes forever to copy it up to the server.

9:57pm - Well, I have nearly all of my favorite software setup on my Sparc 5 now.. Star Office, Netscape, Gimp, Show-meTV, MpegTV, etc... I even did something this time I was never able to figure out before. I can now print to my HP Deskjet, even though Solaris doesn't support printing to this type of printer. It is quite simple really, it just sends the postscript file to Galaxy and the RedHat printfilter takes care of the rest of the printing.
