10:14am - I'm back in Irving today after working half of the day in Arlington yesterday. It has taken me 45 minutes to clean up the tech room. It looked like somebody released a wild bull in here. How can somebody do this in under 5 hours?
Well, I got through all 21 of those Sparc systems yesterday. Randy and Matt said I'm going to start comming over there at least once or twice a week from now on. I'm going to setup some of those Sparc systems in the store while they are waiting to be put on ebay.. They are only going to put a few on there at a time, so there is no harm in puting 1 or 2 out on display.
I downloaded three new operating systems the past few days. I got Suse Linux for Sparc, Linux Mandrake for Sparc, and NetBSD (for multi-architechtures) I downloaded them as CD-Images. Anyway, I installed Mandrake 7.1 last night on my Sparcstation. It was impressive. In fact, I would say that the installation was a lot easier and made a lot more sense than Redhat. The GUI was a lot nicer. Of course, once installation was complete it wouldn't boot into the O/S. So i haven't gotten to play with it much. I installed it on that external harddrive. For some reason or another SILO won't boot to that drive. I think I know the problem but I'm going to have to reinstall it to get it working. I believe I partitioned it incorrectly. Anyway, I also played with SuSE's installer also. Both I would rank well above RedHat in ease of use and layout. I can't believe all this time I've been using RedHat because "thats what everybody else uses" I should have learned by now not to care about that.. if I did, I'd still be running Windows.
6:29pm - Well, the auction is over and I got $129 for that card that was in my Sparc 5. If you minus the other items I bought at the same time as that unit, I have about $150 invested in the unit. That means that I essentially got the unit for $21. Not too bad. Of course.. It has left me wanting a better Sparc system. I have made up my mind that I'm keeping this one though. I'd probably only get about $200 for it on ebay at the most. So I'll retire it to be my webserver once I get an Ultrasparc. I am probably going to get that monitor up at the Arlington store. It is a Silicon Graphics monitor, pretty nice looking. I haven't seen it hooked up though. Randy said he'd sell it for $100.
I forgot.. Adam is going to buy some of the parts out of my old PC workstation for $200. I'm selling him the CPU, Motherboard, and video card.
